Mommyhood

I love being a mom. I feel like I don't need to explain that too much, but I really do. Amidst the extra laundry, endless bottle washing and pumping (TMI? Too bad..), struggle to fit in housecleaning and keeping up with friends, and current season of not taking J out in public, I am still just loving it. It's amazing to watch Baby J grow every day. It seems like every day he talks more, kicks more, grabs more, and everything.. he just interacts more! He's laying on the floor with Matt right now and they are "talking". He's so vocal and personable. I can't wait to see what kind of man he'll grow up to be! Scratch that. I can wait. But I look do look forward to it. :)

Today is Baby J's 4 month mark! Here's his pic!
He has had a few "stalling points" in his weight gain this month, but he is still healthy and happy! Lately he won't finish his bottles which is stressing us out, but such is life. We have learned to be joyful in the valleys and on the mountaintops. God is good to us and we are loving this beautiful boy He's given us!
Here are the things he loves to do:
-stand while we hold him
-show us how strong his neck is by curling forward and holding up his head
-"talk" to us... I wish I knew what he was saying!
-reach out and touch his toys and our faces (leaves scratches behind when his nails are too long!)
-kick (as always!), or as we call it, run!
-watch Scout and smile at him
Baby J, you truly are a joy and the light of our lives!

And, because I can't help it, a video of him in action!
Happy New Year everyone, here's to a 2011 where we slow down to enjoy life before it passes us by!

Blog Winner and Christmas

Have you been waiting with bated breath to find out who the winner is??
I did this the old fashioned way, wrote names on paper and made Matt pick one out of the bowl. It's the elementary teacher in me coming out!
Drumroll please...
Jamie!
You are the winner!
I think it will be more fun for you to have to wait to get your prize in the mail, so I won't tell what it is! Love you friend.

We had a wonderful Christmas. It was busy and full of family, but fun. Traveling even just to Orem or Sandy with a baby takes a lot more effort than traveling alone. It can be tempting to say "no" to things just because it takes extra effort, but I'm glad we piled our car full of all of Baby J's stuff and got to spend some good quality time with both of our families.

There are a lot of things I want to write about, but my mind is a little too full with the things that need to get done today. I have been short lately with Matt, my attitude has not been something to brag about. I'm not totally sure why but I think it's mainly due to the fact that I have been trying to control things because "I can"... does anyone else struggle with that? Anyway, I'm off to run a menagerie of errands... I'll figure out a way to organize my thoughts between now and tomorrow I hope! :)

Top 10 Christmas Faves and 100th post!

Well hello there fellow bloggers! This is my 100th post. I'm copying a few friends of mine, but if you leave a comment with your favorite thing about Christmas time, I'm going to pick one person to get a freebie in the mail! Leave a comment by Christmas Day, Saturday the 25th (I'm sure hoping you knew that..).

Do I sound chipper? I am. It is snowing outside, my Christmas tree is shining in all its pre-lit artificial glory, I'm sipping Good Earth Original tea (Oh, you haven't had it? You're missing out!!), and the most precious little (11 lb 11 oz) baby is sleeping next to me! Life can't get much better. Add to that, my DIY Christmas gifts are almost complete and my husband is out of school until January 3rd. Things are looking up, dear ones, things are looking up!

I decided to make a list of my Christmas Top 10. Here goes.

10. Christmas decorations: Some people act like it's such a burden to decorate for Christmas. Like there's some sort of "keeping-up-with-the-Joneses" that has to happen (by  the way, the only one making you keep up with the Joneses is YOU!). Anyway, I guess I'm trying to say it's not some people's cup of Good Earth tea. But, I love to get out the boxes (translation, Matt gets the boxes out of the dreaded Spidey Lair aka the crawl space) and spew Christmas cheer on every shelf I can find. While teaching, I got many obscure Christmas decorations, none of which match each other, so I've had to make some adjustments.. the mantle holds all things "snowman", the downstairs family room all the Christmas tree things that aren't actually Christmas trees, and the candles go in the kitchen. I don't know why I've categorized things this way, but deal with it!

9. Christmas movies: I love love love watching certain Christmas movies, but ONLY at Christmas time. You will not find me watching these any other time of the year, it just wouldn't seem right. It would be like Christmas infidelity. Among these movies are: Elf (Sometimes I want to answer my phone "Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?" But realize that it would be socially unacceptable), Polar Express, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, White Christmas, and a new hilarious one that Matt's mom introduced us to: The Christmas Wish. (Because after all, what we all need is a squirrel who will deliver $1500 every Thursday between 3 and 3:30). If you haven't seen it, it's hilarious! An oldie, but a goodie! Also, we usually try to go see a few movies during Christmas break. One year we saw 3 movies in 3 days with Matt's dad and brother, it was awesome! Hopefully this year we'll sneak in the new Narnia flick, I'm dying to see it!! Love me some C.S. Lewis.

8. Warm Beverages: Okay, this could be in a "Top 10 of Winter" list, but something about Christmas makes it better. My faves: Good Earth tea (obviously), Wassail (especially from Farnsworth Farms.. new discovery this year thanks to some dear friends!), Peppermint Hot Chocolate, and Starbuck's Eggnog Lattes.

7. Christmas Parties and White Elephant Gift Exchanges: I know I must be one of the very few people who actually enjoy these things, but I seriously do. I love getting together with friends, standing around the food table pretending like we're there to talk but really it's to eat more fudge, and exchanging gifts whether ridiculous or not. (I think the best white elephant exchanges are when there's actually good stuff that people want to steal. This year I got jipped out of an "Awkward Family Photos" book by someone who will remain nameless... you know who you are.

6. Choosing Gifts: So, some of you have read the book The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I'm pretty sure I have all 5 at different times of the month, depending on where my hormone levels are at. Anyway, gift giving is one of my ways that I like to express my love for others. I love finding the perfect gift. Especially when it's something they haven't asked for, but you know they'll like. That's how I feel about all the gifts I got for Matt this year. FINALLY! It's only taken... what, 8 years for this to happen? Yipee! Also, I just LOVE the alternative gifts you can now purchase. We purchased a goat in Haiti in honor of some friends, and I can't tell about the other things we purchased yet because those people might be reading this post, but I love that you can now really make Christmas meaningful and truly about giving in a very tangible way, especially giving to those who are in great need. Some creative ways of giving in honor of friends and family include: buying livestock for families, helping towards the cost of digging a well, medical costs, and school tuition for students in developing nations through various organizations. Also donating clothing to a homeless shelter, donating food to your local food bank, or giving a donation to a meaningful organization in honor or in memory of a loved one.

5. Quality Time: For some reason, time with family and friends seems so much more special around the holidays. It could be something we've culturally created, or it could just be that for once we're actually just focusing on enjoying each other, but I sure love spending time with dear ones on and around Christmas.

4. Traditions: My family has Christmas Eve traditions (open presents, church, drive around to see Christmas lights), Matt's family has Christmas day traditions (presents, meal, family game time), and now we get to start some traditions of our own with a little one! I made a list of "Christmas time" traditions that we are going to start as soon as Baby J can enjoy them. (Maybe next year??) They include:
- Zoo Lights
- Live Nativity
- Lights Downtown
- Sub for Santa for a family
- I thought this list would be longer.. any more ideas?

3. Christmas Music: I am currently shamelessly listening to N'SYNC Home for Christmas (love it!), and also love the following Christmas CD's:Wow Christmas, Point of Grace Winter Wonderland, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Christmas Album, Josh Rosenthal's Narratives, Hanson's Christmas Album, and Joy William's Christmas Album. I also love TSO, Christmas Oldies, and even some Mannheim Steamroller! You will find me listening to and singing along with Christmas music starting somewhere around November 1st and continuing well into January.

2. Decorating the Christmas Tree: I know this is quite similar to #10, but it deserves a category all it's own. I LOVE to pull out all of my childhood ornaments and find the perfect spot for them on our tree! (Which, by the way, we scored for $50 at Rite Aid for our first Christmas in 2004. The stand broke last year, but my handy husband found a tree stand that can work on artificial trees too... voila!) Anyway, every year I tell Matt the story behind my favorite ornaments. "This is the one my Papa sent me when I was 5, this one was from Grandma, this one lights up and moves when you plug a light into it.." And sweet Matt just listens every year as I ramble on about each one... this year Baby J got an earful too, I showed him every ornament and told him about it before putting it on the tree. The best part is, this year, there are 2 ornaments on there for Baby J! A "Baby's First Christmas" ornament from one of Matt's students (who begrudgingly never got one of those ornaments and has made it her life's mission to make sure every baby doesn't suffer the same injustice) and a sparkly peanut ornament my mom gave him in honor of his nickname "Little Peanut". Here's a picture of our tree and my fave ornaments:

 1. The Reason for the Season: Looking past the gifts, the decorations, the lights, the "warm feelings", etc. This time of year is in celebration of the day that God chose to bring us back to Him! I cannot fathom how much He must love each one of us to do what He did. It doesn't make sense. In a world where everyone's trying to "climb the ladder", acquire more, and achieve more; God chose to climb down that ladder, rescue those who were convinced they didn't need rescuing, and He still does it today. I hope that year-round you are able to put life in perspective and truly focus on the One who created us and in whom all things hold together!

Merry Christmas everyone, from our family to yours!

Trying to get back in the groove of things...

So, remember my cleaning schedule I was so good at?
Christmas has thwarted that plan! Well, maybe I'm blaming it on Christmas.. really, this cute little man has thwarted that plan and I am perfectly fine with that. There are times where I spend an hour playing with him and I think of all the things I COULD have gotten done, but realize that spending time with him is time very very well spent.

It has been a crazy few weeks. Basketball season has started for Matt (boooo!). I have been preparing myself for this season for awhile... knowing it was going to be hard on me. It hasn't been horrible so far, especially since I am sewing lots of our Christmas presents this year. I know that sounds strange, but the days just fly by between caring for Baby J, keeping up on dish and bottle washing, laundry, Hungry for Life, and now making Christmas gifts. It has been fun learning more about sewing and how to make things (on the list: aprons and pillows. I'll post pictures after Christmas!). Anyway, our tree is half-decorated which means there are still boxes everywhere, cards are half-finished, but my boy is fully loved! That's what counts right??

God has been using these last few months to teach me a lot. Let me share:
1. Life is a gift. I've been thinking about life and death a lot lately. Not at all in a grim sense, but just about the frailty of life. What is the point of it all anyway? My heart aches for those who believe this life is it. That the point is to have lots of nice stuff, look good at any cost, and fill the calendar with things and hobbies to keep them busy. I truly believe that "busyness" is one of Satan's greatest schemes. We are too busy for each other and too busy to just sit with ourselves and spend time with God. For some reason, the news of Elizabeth Edwards dying on Tuesday hit me in a weird way. Just this week, our small group welcomed 2 new little ones into the world, along with many other births I'm sure, and many people were ushered out. I know we all want to leave a legacy, but is that the important part of life? That people will remember ME for what I did and what I stood for? I want to be part of something bigger, I am part of something bigger. When I take my last breath, I can't wait to see God. It's weird to think that this life is just a preparation for that day, that moment when it all comes into focus. I want people to remember me, yes, but I want them to remember HIM more. Afterall, He is the beginning and the end. Okay, so I'm done preaching. Does this mean we don't enjoy this life and all it has to offer? No way!! If you know me, you know I love a good pair of jeans, a fun road trip, taking pictures, and decorating my home! But, I just don't want that to be the focus of my life.

2. Days spent taking care of a little one are days well spent. Nuff said. :)

3. Sometimes you have to pick the one important thing that needs to get done and let the rest wait for tomorrow. Unfortunately, sometimes this means a shower gets put on the "save for later" list. :)

4. It is definitely easier to give than receive. Being on the receiving end of such mercy and generosity from those around us has been  humbling to say the very least. I pray that I am showing my gratitude to those who have helped with meals, bills, time. It feels so strange not to be able to be the one who is giving the meals, money for bills, and time. It makes me want to repay those who have helped, but I know that's not what they want or even expect in the least. It makes me want to do a good job so that they'll be proud of me, but I know they already are and that's not why they gave in the first place. It's made me see God's grace in such a different light. He has given me His grace and mercy (which just came out gracy.. maybe that's a good hybrid of the two words, lol), and I don't need to feel responsible for repaying Him for any of it. It wouldn't be grace then.

Okay, so maybe that's not a huge list of things I've learned, but I am appreciative that I've had this change of pace in my life to teach me new things. I saw an old friend last night and she said, "Sounds like your life right now is not just a new chapter, but a whole new book." She's totally right. The titles I used to define myself by (teacher, worship team member, volunteer, giver), have now been swapped for one complete opposite one: stay at home mom/caregiver. If you've read my blog before, you know that I've always struggled with finding my worth in what I DO. So, now that it seems I DO a lot less than I used to, I've had to struggle with not attaching my worth to that. Ask Matt, it has been an uphill battle. :)

Anyway, I hope I don't in any way sound like I am not enjoying this time in my life. I am enjoying it immensely. Baby J is just about the sweetest thing I have ever laid my eyes on. He is the happiest baby I've ever known. When I go to get him out of bed in the morning, he is all smiles and giggles. From the very first minute! What a great lesson, rejoice in each new day! I never thought I could love something this much.
We went to the CF clinic this week and they were all seriously delighted to see him and how well he's doing. He has improved oxygen saturation (97%!), less retraction when he breathes (meaning his lungs aren't having to work as hard and he's not breathing as hard), and is 11 lbs!! he gained 2 pounds in a month, which is just huge.
Many people have asked what all his treatments are, so I thought I'd list them out for you in case you would like to know!
- Albuterol (bronchodilator). 2 MDI puffs 2 times a day, before percussion treatment.
- Pulmozyme (a drug that thins out his mucus) given via Nebulizer, one time a day (in the morning, takes about 12 minutes).
- Percussion treatment- 30 minutes 2 times a day. I usually do the morning treatment and Matt does the evening one, unless it's game day.
- Enzymes- he has to have a capsule of enzymes before each eating time. He takes it with applesauce!
- Salt- this gets sprinkled in his applesauce too to keep his sodium levels even (People with CF lose too much salt through their sweat). 1/8 tsp a day.
- Zantac - he doesn't have acid reflux, but he has some malabsorption issues, and this works in tandem with the enzymes to work the best at absorbing fats, proteins and vitamins. 3x/day
- Vitamins - He has to have special vitamins formulated for people with CF, high high doses to compensate for malabsorption.
- Microlipids and formula powder added to his bottles of breastmilk. This is just to fatten that boy up!

So, it looks like a lot, but we've really gotten into a good routine and it doesn't feel like a lot. Seeing it all written down really is crazy! It will be nice when a few things happen: when we can add fats and salts to his food and have him just eat it, when he can swallow pills, when he's big enough for a percussion vest, when he can hold his own nebulizer, etc. BUT I am not wishing away this stage for anything! 3 months is seriously the best age. We just LOVE him and love being parents!!

If you've read this whole post, I wish I had some sort of prize to give you. But instead, I just offer an apology. Sorry it was so long, but thanks for reading the rambling thoughts of a rambling mind!

This is his new trick: getting rattles up over his arm! It happens every time I leave him in his crib to play with a rattle! Hilarious.

Getting his percussion treatment! That blue thing in the back is the "love tapper". :) It's just rubber filled with air, doesn't hurt him at all! And this position gives him ample opportunity to practice holding up his head!

3 Months and Update!

So, it's been awhile. For many reasons. Here's a random and full update!

Today, Baby J is 3 months old! And, (drum roll please), he is 10 lbs. 10 oz! It has felt like such a struggle to get him to put on weight, but he has gained 10 oz. in 7 days! We are so happy. I know this will be a constant struggle and uphill battle, but for now we are enjoying the fact that he's chunking up. Check out the pics!

The HFL auction went so well, we raised $23,000! God is so good. It was so much work, but it definitely paid off and actually went a lot smoother than last year! It seems like every year we figure out a new way of doing something to make things a little easier for us. Thank you to all who donated, came to the event, and prayed for its success! We are so humbled by your generosity and God's provision!

Also, our small group decorated a tree at the Festival of Trees in memory of our friend's sweet baby girl who is now safe, whole, and healthy in the arms of Jesus. My words could never express the sorrow that I feel for our friends; grieving the loss of a child has got to be the hardest thing one could ever have to do. Their transparency, faith, and courage through all of this has been amazing and has made me put our situation in perspective. Please pray with me that God would make Himself abundantly clear and close in their lives in the coming weeks and months. Here are a few pictures of the tree, just found out it raised $1,200 for Primary Children's Medical Center! Praise God!

Okay friends, Happy December!! And, what's your favorite part about the holidays?

Game Day

So, although we are major Utes fans, we're not so thrilled with the way they played on Saturday. Matt went with his 2 brothers and said it was the "most disappointing Utes game" he's ever been to... and wanted to change J out of his adorable Utes outfit as soon as he saw him in it. But, luckily I snapped a few ADORABLE pictures. I just can't get enough of this little man!

The story behind the picture...

Guesses?
You'll never guess.
Today has been quite an eventful day, as the following story will hopefully adequately explain. Now I can laugh, this morning, not so much.
I have learned to plan my days backwards, like this:
10:30 Dr. appt., so that means...
9:15 Jason needs to eat and I need to pump, which means...
8:30 I need to do his Albuterol and percussion therapy, which means...
8:00 I need to bathe him (this is something we forgot to do yesterday and I didn't want the Dr. thinking we were okay with him smelling like old milk) so that means...
7:30 I need to shower and get ready.
All of this planning apparently had me so preoccupied that I melted J's nebulizer parts on the stove. Yes, melted. You see, last night, I boiled the parts to sterilize them, a new part of our "new normal" routine, but forgot to rinse them and set them out to dry. This morning when I saw them still sitting in water, I thought to myself, "I'll have to sterilize those after we get home." After. Apparently, lack of sleep has caught up with me because I guess I turned on the burner and put them on to boil in the water. That was at 7:30. At 8:15 when I was done bathing Jason, I smelled something a little funky wafting up the stairs. I came downstairs to find the middle level completely filled with smoke and the worst burning plastic smell. Smoke was billowing (seriously, billowing) out of the pot on the stove. So, I grabbed it, held my breath and threw in on the back doorstep rug. Hence the picture, that was what was left behind. His nebulizer parts (made out of thick plastic) were completely melted and fused to the bottom of the pot. So, we lost a pot, had to order new nebulizer parts, and gave our new air purifiers a chance to shine. I opened all the windows on the middle level and turned the purifier on high and let it do it's business while I locked Jason, Scout, and I in the bedroom to finish our morning routine. The last thing we need are recently Albuterolized airways breathing in air riddled with plastic nastiness. Suffice to say, it was an eventful morning, we got everything done, and we even made it to the Dr. by 10:31. To add to the stress of the day, J got his 2 month shots today. He took them like a champ but has been super fussy and uncomfortable since. Needless to say, we've been hanging low and doing lots of cuddling today. So, that is the story of the day. Thought you might like it!

Happy 2 Months!

Happy 2 months, Baby J!

Things I want to remember:
- You are such a good baby. You take naps during the day, fall asleep on your own, eat well, and you are so happy! You are a Mr. Steady already, just like your dad.
- I love how you move your feet and hold my finger while you are nursing.
- I love how you like to kick your legs. I chose this picture for this month since your legs are sticking straight out. You love it!
- You are getting more and more smiley everyday. I can't wait until I hear your first laugh!
- You weigh 8 pounds 8.9 ounces. We are so happy to see chubby cheeks and thighs! You finally outgrew your newborn clothing (You are just too long!).
- You don't like your nebulizer treatments, but are getting used to them. You do great with your enzymes, percussion, and vitamin. We're so proud of you!
We love you so much!

In honor of his birthday, here are 31 reasons I love him.

2. He loves God and is constantly in His Word and challenging me to do the same.
3. The way he interacts with his students. I can tell they really like and respect him.
4. His sarcasm.
5. He loves Baby J and wants to be involved in every aspect of caring for him.
6. The way he loves me!
7. How good he is to his mama.
8. He loves sports (even though I complain throughout every football game). :)
9. His loyalty to his family and friends.
10. No matter how tired he is, he will always take Scout for a walk. What a good dog dad!
11. More than half of his wardrobe is blue. It's obviously the fave.
12. He is a wonderful provider and hard worker.
13. He was very close to his dad and strives to be the same kind of father.
14. His laugh, especially when he really gets going and starts howling and crying.

24. His love for the outdoors.
25. He is a great coach (haha, yeah, yeah, great enough for me to marry him). :)
26. He lets me know how much he appreciates me.
27. He mows the lawn.
28. He loves road trips.
29. He is very discerning and very wise.
30. He is very giving and generous with his time, money, and talents.
31. He will do anything for anyone at anytime if they need him.

The past 31 days have been quite the journey. I hope that each of you are able to stop and recognize the beauty in the midst of everyday life. Whether you're in the middle of tragedy, loss, abundance, joy, prosperity, worry, whatever... look for the silver lining and try to thank God for the good things He's given you. They're all around if we'll just look!

And, although Matt's birthday and the end of a great journey were my main beautiful things today, so was the view I woke up to this morning:

And the journey continues! My sweet friend Holly made this journal for me to continue the quest for beauty! Can't wait to start journaling and keep the challenge alive! Thanks Holly!

Day 30

..::Day 30::.. October 26

Today's beautiful thing is bittersweet.

Today is the one year anniversary since my father-in-law's death.
So many things to grieve, yet so many things to celebrate.
I'm going to highlight a few of the things I miss most about him.

How much he cared for his sons and daughters-in-law (daughters in his book). He showed his love in so many ways. Phone calls, gifts, trips up to visit, spending money on vacation, quality time, help with anything if we ever needed it. He helped us so much when Scout got attacked by the pit bull and never asked for anything in return.

He was a servant. Not only did he spend his days meeting with clients and finding out how he could best serve them, he would then do so for his family and church family. We can all learn a lot from him.

His patriotism. He loved our country and would get teary-eyed when praying for service men and women.

His soft heart. He wouldn't want anyone in the courtroom to know it, but he was a man who wasn't afraid to show his emotions. I really respected him for that and it made us all closer as a family to be able to share in that way.

His story-telling. He had a few key stories that he told over and over and over again! Even if I told him I'd already heard it, he proceeded to tell it all over again. We always pretended to be so put out by having to hear a story again, but secretly (or not so secretly) we just loved hearing him tell it again.

His sense of humor. Craig had such a great sense of humor. He made us laugh so hard at his jokes, sarcasm, or doing things to try to get us to laugh (like acting drunk!). He was hilarious, I remember laughing until I cried many times in his presence.

His love for the Utes! He was a die-hard Utes fan and was even a male cheerleader at the U! His squad painted the cougar outside Lavell Edwards stadium red.. a story he loved to tell! I loved going to Utes games with him and singing the fight song side-by-side!

His love for coins and old books. He loved to collect things and was extremely knowledgeable about coins and rare books from the Civil War era. I never got bored listening to him talk about these things.

His love for his wife. He was so devoted to his wife and just adored her. He never put her down, always built her up, and most importantly, let their boys know how much he loved her.

He loved the Lord. His faith was always evident, but became very demonstrative in his last days. There are some amazing stories I will never forget that made me see the Lord in a whole new light. Compassionate, concerned with every little detail of our lives, and so so loving and gracious.

Craig, we miss you. We miss your laugh, your smile, your stories, and even your temper. :) I hope you are able to peek in and see that. I wish you could have met Baby J, but know that someday you'll meet and have lots of stories to tell him about his dad.

To read Craig's obituary, you can click here. A fitting tribute to a wonderful man!

Day 29

..::Day 29::.. October 25

Today's beautiful thing is baby J. After a discouraging weekend, he is up in weight (8 lbs 5 oz!) and is eating well and coughing less. Thank you, Lord! I feel like he's been my beautiful thing quite a bit in this day by day journey, but today comes with a twist.

When I was 9 months pregnant and bored out of my mind, I went on thebump.com and tried out their baby picture predictor. This first picture comes with a great back story.

Okay. So. This was the picture that it made when I selected "automatically detect skin tone". This was funny on so many different levels. First, Matt has this alter-ego. He's African-American and named Theo. He comes out mostly at inappropriate times. I give him a hard time for this, obviously. This did nothing for my cause. Matt loved it. However, here's a conversation we had that made him see things in a different light:
Matt: "It's all fun and games until the baby comes out black! You need to prepare yourself for if that happens."
Me: "No, honey, you'll need to prepare yourself for if that happens."
Matt: "Uh, true. Touche."

This is the child that it created when I selected "fair" skin tone. Creepy. I apologize if this is actually your child, but this picture is creepy. And what's with the hat and scarf!?
So thankful our little man turned out like this:

Day 28

..::Day 28::.. October 24

Today's beautiful thing is easy. The company of friends. This morning, I met 4 friends for breakfast and ate a delicious breakfast panini complete with bacon, eggs, and cheese. How can you go wrong? We sat and chatted about new things in our lives and laughed about memories and favorite recipes from growing up. 2 of the girls were raised in the South, so they talked about all the cheesy comfort foods they grew up on (including salmon croquettes (which, I won't lie, when they first said the name, I thought they said Sam and Crow Eggs... a little disturbing). Anyway, what's your favorite comfort food recipe from your childhood??

Then tonight, I went on behalf of our family to small group. It was a heavy time of meeting together since our friends are dealing with a hard situation concerning their sweet daughter. I'm so glad God gives us friends who will stand by us in prayer and lift us up when we need it most, knowing we will do the same for them. We talked about Hannah from the Bible, who was such a faithful follower of God and such a faithful mother. I know it was a hard subject to discuss given the circumstances. Lord give them strength and peace and endurance to get through this time!

Tying these two things together (comfort food and small group) is the treat I brought. Can't take credit, got it off allrecipes.com. :)

p.s. Another beautiful thing is that J is curled up on my shoulder and is wiggly until I sing, then he is calm!
p.s.s. On May 3rd I emailed someone about baby bedding on KSL... today they e-mailed 2 words: "It's sold." Well, I hope so!

Here's the recipe, it was delicious.

Pumpkin Crumb Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray or grease one 9x13 inch pan.
  2. Reserve 1 cup cake mix. In a large bowl, combine the remaining dry cake mix with 1 egg and 1/2 cup melted butter. Mix well, and then pat into prepared pan.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin, 3 eggs, 1/2 cup white sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Pour over crust.
  4. In a small bowl, combine reserved 1 cup cake mix, 1/2 cup sugar, and 3 tablespoons softened butter. Crumble over pumpkin filling. Sprinkle nuts evenly over the top, if desired.
  5. Bake in preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes.

Day 27

Had this all written out yesterday, then forgot to post it! :)

..::Day 27::.. October 23

Conversation I had yesterday with a sweet lady:
Sweet Lady: How are you doing, really?
Me: Good, I can actually say 'good' now and mean it.
Well, okay so that was just a snippet of the conversation.
Seems like the minute you say you're doing good is the minute that you feel like falling apart.
I've been super emotional the last few days.
Could be the gloomy weather (although I usually love the gloom).
Could be the continued rise and fall of my hormones (although I don't usually like to blame things on hormones).
Could be lots of things.
Our sweet friends who got bad news yesterday regarding their sweet baby girl's health.
The fact that Baby J screamed through both of his new breathing treatments today.
Low sleep, not eating enough.
Today I ran some errands and realized I think I'm just as well staying at home. :) All in the same parking lot, someone cut me off, a kid almost ran into the street right in front of me, a car almost backed into me, and a girl walked   r e a l l y   s l o w l y  to cross the parking lot in front of me, while texting, and I just about had the urge to jump out of the car and let her know how frustrating she was!
Seriously!? Seriously.
Not quite sure if this is normal, but for me it is not!
Hard to find the beauty in a day like today, but I'm going to borrow a picture from my "boss" Mike that he just posted on facebook.
Ah, yes. After the rain there's bound to be a rainbow, right?

Day 26

..::Day 26::.. October 22

Today's post is devoted to all the little gifts that have been trickling in since J was born. We felt so blessed throughout my pregnancy, and we can't believe how generous people are! Anyway, we've gotten a few special little gifts in the past few weeks and I wanted to post about them!

Adorable burp cloth that Kelly made! This burp cloth came with a Moby wrap, which I LOVE, a Target gift card for applesauce and a collection of encouraging bible verses with a little stand. Kelly, you are such a blessing and encouragement!

I love these embroidered burp cloths! They are from Whitney's mom Kim. I just love the colors and the fonts and they are super thick, almost like a little blanket! :) So fun to get gifts from the woman who was my second mom growing up! Love you Kimmy!
This adorable little lovey was given to Jason by my friend Jessie's mom yesterday. I just love how soft it is and can't wait until he's old enough to tote it around!! Thank you Jackie!

Day 25

..:: Day 25::.. October 21

Today was a very interesting day. I met up with a dear friend who is in the midst of moving from SL to Denver. So bittersweet. Happy she can finally get settled into her new home, happy her girls will feel more settled, happy they'll finally be in the same city as her husband, but oh-so-sad that all this means she has to leave.
Beautiful thing #1: Loving on friends no matter if they're here, or there, or somewhere in-between.
Then, I got to meet another dear friend's mom and grandma who had just gotten in town from Indiana. These sweet women have been praying for our family and just wanted to come meet us. What an honor! They even brought the cutest little monkey lovey for Jason with his name, birthdate, and measurements monogrammed on it. Sooo cute, picture coming tomorrow!
Beautiful thing #2: Meeting new friends and feeling the love of the body of Christ!
Next, out of the blue, 2 guys showed up at my doorstep with flowers. Wait! Hold the phone! Neither one was Matt! :) 2 sweet guys, Ben (from church) and Aaron (from HFL) came over to pray with me and Baby J and encourage me. Seriously!? Boys, you will make some sweet husbands some day to 2 lucky ladies!
Beautiful thing #3: Being pleasantly surprised and in awe of the community God has given us, and knowing that J is tugging on everyone's heartstrings!

What a great day, celebrating 8 lbs. 2 oz!

Days 23 and 24

..::Days 23 and 24::.. October 19 and 20

So, I just woke up from a nap. And it's 8:50 pm. My internal clock is totally jumbled up! But, I'm thankful for a nap whenever it occurs. :) Tonight a dear friend of ours brought us dinner and prayed with us and Jason. It was such a wonderful gesture and our bellies are full of a yummy meal. Thanks so much Leisa!

Went through my camera and found some pictures that represent "beautiful" things lately... the captions will explain!

Definitely not a "necessity" but a wonderful invention! The video monitor... now I know which grunts and cries really need attention and which ones I can let go. :) Plus, I can stare at this lovely little face even more!

Alright, so not really "beautiful" but this guy lived on our front picture window for a couple of days. I figured that I need to get used to looking at and paying attention to bugs now that I'm the mom of a boy. :)

One of my nieces dancing in our kitchen... adorable!!!

A blanket I made for my friend from my last post, the Kindergarten one. :) I just love the colors of the fabric, and everyone knows I love that soft fabric on top!

Yummy lemon cupcakes I made for a friend from small group at our small group campout. (I added this picture because I'm kind of jonesing for one of these delicious cupcakes right now...

We recently got rid of all our house plants because of the standing water that can breed a certain bacteria that's not beneficial for Baby J. Happy to do it for him, but sad to get rid of this plant. It is my favorite, called a Crown of Thorns, and was given to me by my dear friend Becky. Luckily she agreed to keep it at her house to keep it in the family. :)

And what would a post be without a picture of Baby J? Check out this adorable smile I caught today! Ack!!!
What's your beautiful thing today?

Days 21 and 22

Can I blame Sunday being my day of rest as the reason I didn't post anything yesterday? Regardless, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :) (How many of you started singing a particular country song when you read that line?)

..::Day 21::.. October 17

Yesterday was a glorious day spent as a family. We just enjoyed being together. I so enjoy watching Matt be a dad. He is such a natural. I always knew he would be, our friends' kids and our nieces just love  adore him. I love watching Jason interact with him and smile at him, I love listening to Matt's songs he makes up for Jason (There once was a baby named Jason, who lived up in the trees, he had a dog named Scout-boy, who was infested with fleas...), and I love just enjoying this phase of life together. I'm so glad we waited 6 years to have kids, it was the perfect amount of time for us. So, yesterday's beautiful thing was Matt. He is caring, thoughtful, considerate, hilarious, sarcastic, fun-loving, calm, steady, easy-going, responsible, loving, open, and might I add quite a looker. :) Here's to you babe! I love you!

My all time favorite!!

Being serenaded by Daddy..

..::Day 22::.. October 18

Today I went to Noah's with a few friends from HFL to solidify a few things for the HFL auction. (p.s. if you haven't gotten a ticket yet, do it now!!! We are quickly selling out!). We are so excited about it! Everything is falling into place and we have gotten so many amazing donations from businesses and individuals. I can't wait to see what the actual day looks like... it's going to be so fun. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people to do this thing, but I am thrilled to watch God provide the funds HFL USA will need for the coming year.

On the way home, my friend Jess and I were talking about how no matter what plans we make, the Lord can and will bring things to pass. Even if every last "i" isn't dotted and every "t" crossed, He will bring things about in a more amazing way than we could have ever planned. As I thought about that later this afternoon, I realized that the same is true for J's health situation. We can have a plan with doctors, and we should, and we can make sure he has access to the very best care possible. But, God is in complete control and He will use our lives and J's life to bring glory to Himself however he sees fit! He is, always has been, and always will be good. End of story. We can rest knowing that regardless of our successes or failures, he is faithful to bring things to pass the way He has planned. So, while I could easily crawl into a little ball most days and mourn the diagnosis and treatments and different "new normal" routine we now have, I know that I can face each day with joy and peace and strength because of who He is.

I am reading a book that a friend gave me called I Will Carry You: The Sacred Dance of Joy and Grief by Angie Smith. Angie and her husband received the devastating news that their 4th daughter would not survive life outside the womb. They decided to continue her pregnancy and this book entails every step of their journey: their prayers, hopes, fears, and ultimately how their daughter touched more people than they ever thought possible. I am only halfway through the book (riddled with tear-stained pages at this point) and have been so encouraged by it. Not that I am going through anything even as close to as hard as that, but I am so thankful that she chose to write this book to help those going through a trial, no matter what it may be. A few quotes and verses that have been helpful lately:

"As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things." Ecclesiasted 11:5

"Joy is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ."

"I am pretty comfortable saying he is in complete control until the ground grows weak beneath me. At that point I tell Him what He should do to fix it. While I know there isn't anything wrong with asking God to intervene, there is a gentle surrender that I was drawn to in this story [the story of Mary and Martha after their brother Lazarus died in John 11]. Recognize who He is and tell Him the Problem. Leave the rest to him. ... there is always room for doubt wherever God has made a way for faith." p. 24

Anyway, somehow this post got a little deeper than I had first anticipated. Here are a few more recent pictures of our sweet baby J, smiling away! Nothing can melt my heart like a crooked and gummy smile from this little man.

p.s. Beautiful thing #2 just showed up on my doorstep! I'll write about it tomorrow. :)

Hilarious! I think he looks like a Kewpie doll here...
